Technics is celebrating 55 years of its iconic SL-1200 turntable with a limited-edition model that gives the legendary DJ deck a gold makeover.  

The SL-1200 55th Anniversary Edition is based on the current SL-1200MK7 and will be limited to just 12,000 units worldwide. 

The anniversary model adds gold-coloured detailing to the S-shaped aluminium tonearm, tonearm base, platter rim and strobe markings, along with the knobs and buttons. A special gold-themed slip mat is also included.

Designed to appeal to collector’s, each turntable will have an individually engraved anniversary badge and serial number.

Beneath its shiny gold exterior, the core functionality of the SL-1200 is retained in the limited edition model. The turntable features a digitally controlled single-rotor direct-drive motor, a vertical pitch fader offering up to ±16% adjustment, an adjustable-height tonearm and Reverse Play mode.

The SL-1200’s story began 55 years ago in the early 1970s. Technics developed it as a high-performance direct-drive turntable for home listeners. Its combination of high torque, stable rotation, fast start-up and solid construction made it a favourite among DJs and helped establish its place in the development of modern DJ culture.

The anniversary release also continues Technics’ long tradition of producing special-edition SL-1200 models. Earlier limited versions have used gold finishes and individually numbered badges, including the SL-1200LTD, which Technics was produced in a run of 5,000.

For the 55th anniversary edition, buyers will have seven colours to choose from: gold, blue, red, black, green, white and grey, each with the same gold-accented treatment.

The launch arrives ahead of the SL-1200’s actual 55th anniversary in 2027, with Technics already beginning its celebrations this year. The company has also announced a special DJ set as part of the anniversary.

There is currently no confirmed Australian price for the Technics SL-1200 55th Anniversary Edition with details expected closer to the September 2026 launch. The Technics website currently shows the turntable as US$1499 but unavailable for oder.Â
