Tech Issues Could See Apple’s VR/AR Headset Held Back

Set to be Apple’s biggest release in years, insiders are saying the company’s highly anticipated combined virtual and augmented reality headset – which was believed to be unveiling at Apple’s annual conference in June, with physical release next year – will be held off.

Now the announcement is expected to be postponed until late this year, with actual release in 2023.

The news – which caused a dip in Apple’s shares – is said to be due to development issues related to overheating, cameras and software.

Fans and the industry alike are excited about the prospects it the high-end next-big-thing AR/VR device offers, and word recently filtered out that Apple are already working on the next generation of the product that many believe they are pegging as the future of the company, set to make the iPhone obsolete by 2032, so this will be a major blow.

Apple have been tinkering away at the headset since 2015, with previous plans for it to be introduced in 2021 and ship this year.

Combining both virtual and augmented reality in the one headset with an 8K screen, the Apple device is aiming to set the way for the future, hoping to get the public used to such devices. But actually getting the product out there is proving to be the stumbling block. Still, the delay will give the company time to work on virtual and augmented apps to go with the dedicated App Store insiders say the headset will have.

While ironing out any tech difficulties, Apple will also be able to work further on support for the device in iOS 16, codenamed Sydney, set to be unveiled in June.

It’s believed this means Apple might still be able to at least preview technical aspects of the headset and/or its software in June, even if those eager to see it in full flight have to wait.

Apple have previously had to deal with heating issues with the headset, placing high-powered processors in an external device to transmit data wirelessly, though that plan was ditched due it being clunky to have to carry around a second device.

Apple have more than 2000 employees working on this project, though it’s been reported that recent months have seen several staff leave for gigs at Meta, their main rival in this space.

Meanwhile, speculation is rife as to what the headset will be called. Leading naming contenders include Apple Vision, Apple Reality, and iSight.
