Google is winding down its Steam for Chromebooks experiment, with support set to end in 2026.

After nearly three years in beta, the Steam app and all games installed through it will no longer be playable on ChromeOS devices, starting January 1.

The news surfaced after users attempting to install Steam on supported Chromebooks encountered a message confirming the beta’s closure.

“The Steam for Chromebook Beta program will conclude on January 1st, 2026. After this date, games installed as part of the Beta will no longer be available to play on your device,” the notification reads.

Steam for Chromebooks launched in early 2022 as part of Google’s broader push to make ChromeOS a viable gaming platform.

The initiative saw partnerships with hardware makers like ASUS and Acer releasing gaming-focused Chromebooks, as well as integration of Valve’s Proton compatibility layer – technology that allows many Windows games to run on Linux-based systems.

Despite this, Steam never graduated from beta, with limited updates and a restricted library of compatible games.

One major challenge has been hardware limitations.

Most Chromebooks run on low-power processors and integrated graphics, which struggle to handle demanding games, even with Proton.

Google recommended at least an Intel Core i3 or Ryzen 3 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB storage to run the Steam beta, but even then, only a small selection of titles ran smoothly.

With Steam support ending, Chromebook gamers will likely turn to cloud gaming services like NVIDIA GeForce Now, Xbox Cloud Gaming, or Amazon Luna, all of which Google currently promotes for gaming on ChromeOS.

Android games via the Play Store also remain an option, although the experience is more casual compared to full PC gaming.

Google’s message hints that lessons from the Steam beta will shape the “future of Chromebook gaming,” though details remain unclear.

After Google’s earlier shutdown of its Stadia cloud gaming platform, it seems the company is refocusing its efforts toward cloud-based and Android gaming rather than native Steam support on ChromeOS.
