Google has rolled out a new feature for Gemini’s Canvas, the free interactive workspace within the AI chatbot’s app, enabling users to generate presentation slides from prompts or uploaded files.

Gemini can create presentations with just a text prompt, such as “Upload any source to create a presentation on [a specific topic].”

Alternatively, users can upload files including documents, spreadsheets, and research papers to generate presentations based on specific sources.

The resulting decks automatically include themes and images alongside text.

Users can export presentations directly from the Gemini app into Google Slides for further editing, refinement, or collaborative work with teammates.

The capability is rolling out to both personal Google accounts and Workspace accounts.

Google launched Canvas in March 2025 for users to share writing or code with Gemini for editing.

When users input code or prompts for projects like apps, web pages, and infographics, Canvas displays a visual representation of their design.

The presentation generation feature targets students and employees who need to create slide decks quickly, reducing time spent on formatting and initial content structuring.

Google has not disclosed specific limitations on file types, file sizes, or presentation length.

The feature requires a Google account and access to Gemini, which is available free for basic use with premium features available through Google One AI Premium subscription.

Gemini is free for basic use.

Google One AI Premium, which includes Gemini Advanced with expanded capabilities, costs $28.99 per month in Australia.

It’s unclear whether presentation generation requires the premium subscription or is available to all Gemini users.

The feature positions Google’s Gemini against Microsoft’s Copilot, which offers similar presentation generation capabilities within PowerPoint.

Both AI assistants aim to streamline content creation workflows for business and educational users.
