Samsung has launched its first branded credit card in the US, taking on Apple Card as it expands the Galaxy ecosystem beyond smartphones, appliances and digital services.

The Samsung Galaxy Card is issued by Barclays US Consumer Bank and operates on the Visa network, with applications opening to the US public on July 22.

Cardholders will receive 5% cash rewards on eligible purchases made directly from Samsung, including Galaxy smartphones, televisions, tablets and other devices.

Purchases made through Samsung Wallet earn 3% cash rewards, while eligible streaming services including Netflix, Disney+ and Spotify receive 2%. All other qualifying purchases earn 1%.

Samsung is also offering new customers US$200 in bonus cash rewards after they spend US$2,000 within the first 90 days of opening an account.

The card will be offered virtually and as a premium black metal physical card bearing the Samsung logo.

It arrives as Samsung prepares to unveil its latest devices at its July Galaxy Unpacked event, giving customers an additional incentive to purchase new Galaxy products directly from the company.

The launch positions Samsung against Apple, which entered the US credit card market with the Apple Card (below) in 2019. The card remains available only in the US.

Samsung said the Galaxy Card would integrate with Samsung Wallet, allowing customers to keep it alongside compatible payment cards, identification documents, passes and digital keys. Financial information will be protected by the company’s Knox security platform.

“For years, users have relied on Samsung products to enhance their daily life,” Samsung digital wallet chief Woncheol Chai said.

“Today, Samsung Galaxy Card offers users a new way to be rewarded every time you pay.”

The card also includes a 20% discount on Samsung VIP Advantage memberships, with customers earning 5% cash rewards when purchasing or renewing the service.

Samsung has not yet announced plans to launch the Galaxy Card in Australia.
