Samsung Showcase Next-Gen Appliances To Oz Retailers

Samsung has used its Southeast Asia and Oceania Forum to showcase its next-generation Family Hub fridge to Aussie retailers, boasting a slew of IoT and AI capabilities across food management, entertainment and communication.

A 2019 CES Innovation award honouree in the software and mobile apps category, the Family Hub 4.0 fridge incorporates a new version of Bixby artificial intelligence, offering further control of IoT devices and smart home products via voice.

Users can ask Bixby to hear a morning news and weather brief, alongside synchronised visuals on the fridge’s screen.

The appliance also debuts a new ‘Family Board’ – a highly interactive bulletin screen for family members to communicate.

Despite competition from Google Assistant, Samsung asserts Bixby integration is now smarter on the fridge, boasting more conversational interaction when booking an Uber, Expedia flight, setting the oven temperature plus more.

Using voice ID technology, Bixby has also been improved to offer tailored information according to each family member’s voice.

Enhancing multi-tasking, users can mirror third-party apps straight onto the Family Hub’s screen via ‘Smart View’ – including answering calls hands-free and browsing apps.

Maintenance has been further enhanced via improved app updating and deleting.

The new Family Hub fridge (pictured below) will also feature 2 x AKG speakers, for immersive audio playback in the kitchen. The Australian model will reportedly not feature ‘AKG’ branding on the fridge surface.

Owners can now also view and control hundreds of Samsung and third-party smart home devices from the Family Hub screen via Bixby voice controls.

Moving in a similar direction as its TV range, Samsung’s new Family Hub fridge offers an Ambient Mode to “blend into your home” when the touch screen is inactive.

Food management has also been updated, complemented by recipe search functionalities.

Capabilities include adding items to a Shopping List, making expiration date reminders, and pre-setting the oven straight from the Recipes app using voice commands.

Samsung Australia will also release several new side-by-side fridges in April or May, featuring a revamped design and some new finish options.

The Korean giant has also further ramped up its laundry portfolio, with the unveiling of its first ultra ‘large capacity’ home QuickDrive washing machine and dryer in Australia. The products are tipped to release around June.

Taking on the likes of Dyson and LG, Samsung has further expanded its wireless stick vacuum portfolio, with the unveiling of its new POWERstick Jet200.

The hybrid device boasts both mop and vacuum functionality, whilst pledging 60 minutes of battery life from a single charge. The product is confirmed to launch globally this year, with Australian pricing and availability to be announced.
