Samsung Display To Use Transparent Polyimide In Foldable OLED Panels
Samsung Display is gearing up to use a transparent polyimide substrate for its foldable OLED panels, which will result in improved picture quality for the under-panel camera.
The use of a transparent panel, as oppose to the current yellow-tinged one, will increase the amount of light absorbed through the panel, which means better photos from the under-panel camera.
This will solve one of the biggest issues with under panel cameras, which are currently hampered by the yellow polyimide. At the moment, Samsung Display uses a workaround of sorts, by reducing the pixel count around the lens hole, from 374ppi to 187ppi in the case of the Z Fold3.

With fewer, larger pixels, there is more space for the light to get through in this region.
Using a transparent polyimide substrate will fix this issue and allow the pixels-per-inch count to remain standard across the entire screen. This technology is less durable, and more expensive – suggesting that this might not be the ultimate solution.
Samsung is planning to roll this technology out on its foldable OLED panels by 2024.
