New Wireless Charging Standard For Android Phones

Meet Qi2: the new global wireless charging standard for Android devices which builds off Apple’s MagSafe technology.

Announced by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) at CES 2023, this standard will use the new Magnetic Power Profile to ensure that mobiles and wearables are perfectly aligned with charging devices to charge faster and save energy- something that Android companies like Samsung and Google can easily implement.

The first Qi2-certified mobile phones and chargers will be arriving later in 2023, effectively replacing Qi standard wireless chargers.

Consumers and retailers are often confused as to what devices are Qi certified and those that claim to work with Qi but are not Qi certified. They can now rest assured with this new Q2 global standard.

“Energy efficiency and sustainability are on everyone’s minds these days,” says Struhsaker.

“Qi2’s perfect alignment improves energy efficiency by reducing the energy loss that can happen when the phone or the charger is not aligned. Just as important, Qi2 will greatly reduce the landfill waste associated with wired charger replacement due to plugs breaking and the stress placed on cords from daily connecting and disconnecting.”
