The Social network is to recognise your face, even in disguise, with its purchase of start-up Face.com.

The Israeli Internet start-up has developed a face recognition platform that helps people tag their own photos, find pics of themselves and their mates they never knew existed.

Facebook, already a master tagger, now has technology which will recognise faces even in poor lighting, out of focus, or if people are in disguise wearing eyeglasses, facial hair, and even Halloween costumes.

Face.com also has developed two other apps – Phototagger and Celebrityfindr, which scans Twitter for photos celebs have posted.

The internet start up is the third purchase in several weeks as it looks to ramp up its technology artillery and already has a partnership with the facial recognition experts via Photo Finder app for Facebook.

No word on how much Mark Zuckerberg and his team paid for the company, having forked out $1bn for imaging guru Instagram recently.

“We love building products, and like our friends at Facebook, we think that mobile is a critical part of people’s lives as they both create and consume content, and share contentwith their social graph,” Face.com said on a blog dated June 18.

“By working with Facebook directly, and joining their team, we’ll have more opportunities to build amazing products that will be employed by consumers – that’s all we’ve ever wanted to do. :)”

Face.com will continue to support its developer community, it confirmed on a blog.
