Prince Philip’s Tech Legacy

The late Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, made a little known but most memorable contribution to the world of British technology, albeit a passive one.

Hackers targeted his personal ViewData message box, which mostly contained birthday greetings to Princess Diana from random members of the public and showed no signs of Philip himself using it.

The Prince was furious when he found out, which prompted Westminster to implement the UK’s Computer Misuse Act 1990 and which has since led to a swathe of arrests of scammers, hackers and online trolls.

He then kept an eye on all things tech-related, describing the internet as a fantastic development, but only if it was used with honesty and integrity.
