Anthony Albanese has said his government will aim to push through privacy law changes, after the Optus hack that impacting 9.8 million Australians.

Albanese called the hack a “huge wake-up call for the corporate sector in terms of protecting the data which is there,” the Prime Minister told 4BC radio.

“We want to make sure as well that we change some of the privacy provisions as well so that, if people are caught up in these, the banks can be let know.

“We know that in today’s world there are actors, some state actors but also criminal organisations, that want to get hold of people’s data.”

Current privacy laws don’t require banks be told when customer information has been stolen from another service providers, legislation which Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil is working to overhaul.
