Panasonic S1H Mirrorless Cam Now Netflix-Certified

Budding filmmakers now have a relatively inexpensive option for all their filming needs with Panasonic’s latest full-frame Lumix S1H mirrorless camera now becoming the first of its kind to become Netflix-certified, as part of the streaming giant’s Post Technology Alliance.

Although still being quite expensive, at $5,999, the certification now makes the Lumix S1H the cheapest full-frame mirrorless camera to make the cut.

The Netflix Post Technology Alliance is a program for manufacturers of products that generate or manage any kind of sound data, image data, or metadata from production through post.

Products with this certification are evaluated and tested to ensure they meet Netflix’s “technical and workflow requirements, and the manufacturers of participating products are committed to providing the highest level of innovation, support and customer service”.

Generally given to larger cinema-grade cameras, the recognition means S1H cameras can now be used in productions as a secondary camera, given the footage is captured within a range of formats and settings.

According to Netflix’s production guide, the S1H has to be shot in at least 4K in V-Log with 4:2:2 10-bit All-I encoding and pixel-for-pixel readout in either full-frame or Super 35 modes.

Other recommendations include Noise Reduction and Sharpening set to zero, turning off diffraction and vignetting compensation, using Pixel Refresh setting yearly, using the sensor cleaning feature, and making sure firmware is always up-to-date.
