Nintendo has added variable refresh rate support to the Switch 2 when connected to a TV, reversing its earlier decision to restrict the feature to handheld mode.

Docked VRR arrives through the console’s version 23.0.0 system update and requires owners to separately update their Switch 2 Dock.

The feature synchronises a compatible television or monitor’s refresh rate with the frame rate produced by a game. This can reduce screen tearing, judder and visible stuttering when performance fluctuates.

Nintendo initially advertised VRR for both portable and TV modes before removing references to docked support and confirming the technology would only operate on the Switch 2’s built-in display at launch.

Once updated, owners can enable the new VRR Output option through the Display section of System Settings. Both the connected screen and individual game must support the feature.

However, early testing indicates docked VRR may currently operate through a whitelist, with Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour reportedly the only confirmed compatible title at launch.

Support should expand as Nintendo and other developers update additional games. Titles with variable frame rates or 120fps performance modes could benefit most from the technology.

VRR has already been available on competing PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles, as well as PCs.

Version 23.0.0 introduces several other features, including complete system transfers between two Switch 2 consoles and an option to enable or disable Handheld Mode Boost through Quick Settings.

GameChat now displays previously joined conversations, allows users to start a chat without initially inviting friends and adds screen-size controls.

Nintendo has also expanded Virtual Game Card settings and introduced temporary online licences when a game card cannot be transferred from another offline console.

Additional changes include Mii sharing through QR codes and the ability to save separate audio settings for each connected television.

The update began rolling out in Japan, with wider availability expected to follow. Australian owners can check for it through System Settings and will also need to update their dock before enabling TV-mode VRR.
