Huawei To Launch HarmonyOS Smartwatch

Reports have suggested that Huawei’s next HarmonyOS-powered device will be its upcoming range of smartwatches.

Huawei initially launched its new HarmonyOS in a bid to lessen its reliance on Google’s Android OS, amid US government restrictions.

Brought on by US President Donald Trump, the restriction blocks any US company from doing business with Huawei, unless given prior government approval.

This follows the recent announcement that the first Huawei devices to be powered with its new home-grown OS would be the Honor Vision Smart TV range.

Huawei plans to implement HarmonyOS across its suite of hardware offerings, replacing the Lite OS, as well as Google’s Wear OS, currently being used.

According to GSM Arena, Huawei decided to develop a HarmonyOS-powered smartwatch because of the middling performance of the company’s previous efforts.

Huawei believes its new modular OS will give it a better shot at competing in the smart wearables market against brands like Samsung and Apple, according to the report.

The HarmonyOS supports a wide variety of devices, including smartphones, tablets, computers, smart TVs and other appliances, as well as in-vehicle systems, among other devices.

Because the HarmonyOS is open source, developers are given the ability to create apps for it using the ARK Compiler.

It is also expected that it will get digital assistant support in the near future, though this has not yet been officially confirmed.
