MediaTek Again Tops Smartphone SoC Market
Taiwanese chip designer Mediatek has again topped the global AP-SoC chipset market share in figures for Q1/2025 released by Counterpoint.
In its quarterly market survey, Counterpoint rated Mediatek (36%) well ahead of main rival Qualcomm (26%) and Apple (17%). Other players – UNISO, Samsung, and HiSilico (Huawei) together snared just 20% overall.
Counterpoint says MediaTek’s shipments growth was driven mainly by increased demand for entry-level and mainstream chipsets, whereas premium-tier shipments declined.
“The mid-high segment’s shipments increased due to the launch of the Dimensity 8400,” says Counterpoint.
Qualcomm’s flat performance was primarily driven by its premium chipsets. Growth was supported by the Snapdragon 8 Elite, which it says secured multiple design wins, including exclusivity with the Samsung Galaxy S25 series.
It notched up new wins for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 series.
Apple’s chipset shipments increased YoY in Q1 2025 due to the launch of the iPhone 16e with the Apple A18 chipset. But seasonal issues curbed Apple’s performance in the market overall.
Samsung was a relatively minor player at 5% but made some gain. Its Exynos shipments increased in the quarter due to the launch of the Galaxy A56 with the Exynos 1580 and the Galaxy A16 5G with the Exynos 1330.
Shipments of the Exynos 1380 rose on high volume sales of the Galaxy A26 series.
China Huawei’s share declined marginally in the quarter, but it still enjoys a strong brand preference and a loyal customer base in China.
Counterpoint says the launch of the Huawei Nova 13 series with the Kirin 8010 chipset, and the Huawei Mate 70 series, drove shipments for HiSilicon in Q1 2025.
