JB Hi Fi Giving Away 5 82″ 8K TVs For Cyberpunk Game Launch
A contest from JB Hi-Fi is sweetening the pot on preorders for Cyberpunk 2077, a highly anticipated game that has also come under fire because their staff were told to work six days a week.
The JB Hi-Fi promotion is giving away five 82-inch 8K Samsung OLED TVs to customers who pre-order the game by Polish developer CD Projekt Red (CDPR), makers of the successful game series The Witcher.
Cyberpunk 2077 will be an open-world action-adventure game set in a dystopian future city. Originally slated to release on April 16, the game starring Keanu Reeves was pushed back to September and then November of this year.
CDPR last year promised that there would be no mandatory “crunch”, or excessive overtime, on Cyberpunk 2077; however, in an email to CD Projekt Red staff seen by Bloomberg, studio head Adam Badowski has revealed that due to COVID-19 staff are now having to work six days a week to get the game out.
“I know this is in direct opposition to what we’ve said about crunch. It’s also in direct opposition to what I personally grew to believe a while back – that crunch should never be the answer. But we’ve extended all other possible means of navigating the situation,” he said. An anonymous employee also indicated to Bloomberg that some staff had been working nights and weekends for over a year.
In a statement to ChannelNews, game industry worker advocacy group Game Workers Unite Australia (GWU Australia) said that while it would not be appropriate to comment on Polish labour law, the studio should be “ashamed of its actions”. They made no mention of how companies that have struggled during COVID-19 are supposed to meet deadlines and actually get a product out in time for peak buying periods.
It is not the only studio in the industry to face questions over crunch, either: Anthem developer BioWare, Mortal Kombat 11 developer NetherRealm Studios, and Red Dead Redemption 2 studio Rockstar Games have all recently seen heavy criticism for excessive overtime practices.
Cyberpunk 2077 will release for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on November 19.
