Online retailer Update Technology has paid a $10,200 fine after the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission found that Update had been marketing high-lift jacks that did not comply with the mandatory safety standards.
The ACCC purchased a high lift jack from Update Technology, and had it tested by a National Association of Testing Authorities-approved facility. It was found not to comply with current safety performance requirements, including overload capacity, and did not have the required labeling.
Given the serious risks involved, “suppliers of high-lift jacks are on notice that they must ensure that the jacks they supply comply with the current mandatory standard, or else they could face enforcement action by the ACCC,” said the commission’s deputy chairperson Delia Rickard.
The ACCC notes that Update Technology is the fourth high-lift jack retailer to pay an infringement notice penalty following an ACCC surveillance campaign.
