iPhone 15 May Throttle Non-Apple USB-C Cables

Apple has seemingly found a way around the new EU regulations that force all devices to use a standard USB-C charging connection.

A new report claims that Apple is planning to throttle the charging power of cables that don’t have its own MFI (Made For iPhone) certification, with Foxconn already in mass production of MFI accessories like EarPods and cables.

The EU rules dictate that “all devices that support fast charging will now have the same charging speed, allowing users to charge their devices at the same speed with any compatible charger,” which should effectively block Apple from restricting fast charging up to a point. However, the rules are vague, and Apple could likely offer a super-fast charging option.

A number of Chinese brands who use USB-C charging — such as Xiaomi and Oppo — already do a similar thing, restricting super-fast charging to their own branded cables, so it isn’t unheard of.

Whether it will pass regulatory muster is another thing entirety.
