Internet Outfits Lobby Trump
US Internet companies including Facebook and Amazon have wasted no time in letting President-elect Donald Trump know what they expect from his administration.
They have sent him a list of policy priorities that includes promoting strong encryption, immigration reform and maintaining liability protections from content that users share on their platforms. Their plans for immigration reform would allow more high-skilled workers to stay in the US – Trump’s policy is for less.
The list was sent by the Internet Association, an umbrella trade group, whose 40 members include Google, Uber and Twitter. It’s an effort to repair the uncertain relationship between the technology sector and Trump, who is disliked by many in Silicon Valley.
While some of the requests align with Trump’s policies, he is unlikely to support strong encryption in products that could hinder criminal and government investigations.
