Intel Unveils 5GHz 9th Gen Core CPUs For Gaming, Content Creation

Intel has officially launched its new suite of processors, 9th Gen H-series, that promise to deliver desktop-level speeds and better connectivity to high-end laptops designed for gaming and content creation.

The heavy hitter in the series is the Core i9-9980HK an unlocked overclockable eight-core chip that has a base speed of 2.4GHz that can boost up to 5GHz, a rate reserved for desktop PCs.

Like previous Core i9 chips, the latest model features 16 threads and comes with 16MB of cache, but this version supports Intel’s latest WiFi 6 networking cards with speeds up to 2.4 Gbps.

According to Intel’s announcement post, the i9-9980HK provides a 56 per cent improvement in gameplay and load times and up to 54 per cent speedier 4K video editing that the three-year-old i7 chipset.

The 9980HK can be found in the latest gaming notebooks from Acer, ASUS, Lenovo, MSI and more — most of whom announced their new gaming laptops to coincide with Intel’s news.

For those that don’t need to reach the overclocking speeds of the 9980HK, Intel is offering the 9880H which is almost as fast, but not quite.

These new chipsets are built around a 45-watt design increasing portability with improved battery consumption, they still won’t reach levels on 12-hours plus of battery life, but it could mean more than a couple of hours before you need to recharge.

Intel rounded out the rest of its 9th-gen line with the cheaper gaming ready 5GHz reaching but not officially overclockable i9-9900 chipset, and 25 different CPU options across the Pentium Gold, Celeron, Core i3, i5, i7, and i9 chipsets to give a boost to lower-end entry-level computers.
