Intel, Nvidia Launch Mobile Gaming Chips

Intel and Nvidia have launched respective broadsides against mutual rival AMD with the release of new gaming-focused mobile processors and graphics cards.

From Intel comes the new 11th-generation H-Series mobile processors. Led by the Intel Core i9-11980HK, which the chipmaker bills as the “World’s Best Gaming Laptop Processor”, the range promises desktop-quality gaming performance on notebooks, and includes support for Wi-Fi 6E; Thunderbolt 4; DDR4 RAM up to 3200GHz; and up to 8 cores and 16 threads with single and dual-core turbo performance up to 5.0GHz.

According to Chris Walker, Intel corporate vice president and general manager of the Mobile Client Platforms Group, the range represents a new height for mobile gaming PCs.

“These new H-series processors are an exciting extension of our 11th Gen mobile family with double-digit single core and multi-core performance improvements, leading gameplay, direct attached storage and 20 PCIe 4.0 lanes for true enthusiast-level platform bandwidth.

“11th Gen H-series is the industry’s most performant mobile processor that empowers users to game, create and connect with leadership performance at any enthusiast form factor,” said Walker.

Nvidia, meanwhile, has officially unveiled its GeForce RTX 3050 and 3050 Ti mobile graphics cards. Built for 1080p gaming, the RTX 3050 series is billed as bringing Nvidia’s Ampere architecture including real-time ray tracing and DLSS to a mainstream audience.

According to Mark Aevermann, director of product management for laptops at Nvidia, the new slim, affordable gaming laptops set to release with RTX 3050 and 3050 Ti GPUs are a good opportunity to upgrade older systems.

“There are now five times more RTX 30 Series gaming laptops that are thinner than 18mm compared with previous-generation RTX systems, delivering groundbreaking performance with very sleek and portable designs,” he said.

There is no word from Nvidia as yet on full desktop versions of the RTX 3050 series.

While AMD, the chief opponent of both Nvidia and Intel, has released Ryzen 5000 series mobile CPUs for gaming laptops, it has not yet expanded into Radeon 6000 series mobile GPUs.
