Dolby Laboratories has unveiled Dolby Vision 2, a next-generation upgrade to its HDR technology, promising sharper, brighter and more intelligent picture quality.

The announcement was made overnight at IFA 2025 in Berlin, with Hisense named as the first TV brand to integrate the new standard into its upcoming RGB-MiniLED flagship models.

French broadcaster CANAL+ also confirmed it will be the first entertainment company to support Dolby Vision 2 across movies, TV shows and live sports, highlighting the format’s ambitions beyond hardware.

Dolby Vision has been the benchmark for HDR for more than a decade. With Dolby Vision 2, the company is introducing a redesigned image engine powered by AI-driven “Content Intelligence”.

This feature automatically adjusts a TV’s performance to the viewer’s environment and the content being played. Innovations include Precision Black to reduce “too dark” scenes, Light Sense to adapt to ambient lighting, and dedicated sports and gaming modes with improved motion handling.

John Couling, Senior Vice President of Entertainment at Dolby, said the update was designed to keep pace with rapidly advancing TV technology while giving creators more tools to push boundaries.

“Dolby Vision 2 redefines how we think of Dolby Vision to unleash the full capabilities of modern TVs,” he said.

The new standard will come in two tiers: Dolby Vision 2 Max, built for the highest-performing displays with premium features like bi-directional tone mapping for brighter highlights and richer colours, and Dolby Vision 2, which delivers the core benefits to mainstream TVs.

Hisense will be the first to market, powered by MediaTek’s Pentonic 800 chip with MiraVision Pro.

“Dolby Vision 2 jointly with our RGB-MiniLED technology can deliver astonishing brightness and colour, unlocking potential not possible until today,” said Sonny Ming, GM of Hisense TV Product Marketing.

Dolby also teased Authentic Motion, a creative-driven tool that allows filmmakers to control motion smoothness shot by shot – aimed at delivering a more cinematic experience without distracting judder.

With major TV brands and content providers on board, Dolby Vision 2 looks set to become the new gold standard for home entertainment picture quality.
