Government To Review Telecoms Provision In New Developments

Communications Minister Paul Fletcher has announced a review of the arrangements for telecommunications in new developments that he says will drive competition and make sure Australians continue to have access to high-quality infrastructure in new areas.

The current policy was put in place in 2015 to stimulate the provision of telecommunications infrastructure in new developments. It put responsibility for this on the developer and – as a fallback – made NBN Co the provider of last resort in developments with more than 100 residences and Telstra in developments with less.

A discussion paper for the review sets out a number of issues with the current policy, one of which is developers failing to follow the policy and causing inconvenience, delays and additional costs for property buyers and carriers.
