Blackberry is shutting off services for its non-Android phones as it focuses on its enterprise software business, bringing an end to the classic Blackberry OS.

The end-of-life move – which was announced in September 2020 – completes Blackberry’s pivot to enterprise software and security, and means anyone still holding on to their once-iconic Blackberry smartphones will find they no longer work as intended.

“As a reminder, the legacy services for Blackberry 7.1 OS and earlier, Blackberry 10 software, Blackberry PlayBook OS 2.1 and earlier versions, will no longer be available after January 4, 2022.

“As of this date, devices running these legacy services and software through either carrier or Wi-Fi connections will no longer reliably function, including for data, phone calls, SMS and 9-1-1 functionality,” the company said.

Android-powered Blackberry phones were made by TCL until the Chinese company dropped the licence in 2020. While a new company, OnwardMobility, promised a 5G Blackberry-branded smartphone to arrive in 2021, the device has so far yet to materialise.
