Google Extends Life Of Chromebooks
A total of eight Chromebooks will now reportedly receive software updates until June 2025, for an added three years to the original Auto Update Expiration Date of 2022.
It follows the recent update to Chrome OS 77, which began its stable rollout with improvements to Google Assistant and media management tools.
The laptops gaining the extra three years are all Lenovo products, except for the Poin2 Chromebook 14.
- Lenovo Flex 11 Chromebook
- Lenovo 100e Chromebook 2nd Gen MTK
- Lenovo N23 Yoga Chromebook
- Lenovo 300e Chromebook
- Lenovo 300e Chromebook 2nd Gen MTK
- Lenovo Ideapad S330 Chromebook
- Lenovo Ideapad C330 Chromebook
- Poin2 Chromebook 14
Each Chromebook sold is given a guarantee by Google of regular automatic updates for 6.5 years, though this only applies to the hardware platform.
This recent move shows a push from Google to extend the life of their Chromebook products, as rumours swell surrounding a possible merger between Android and Chrome OS into Fuchsia.
However, as usual, there is some fine print to be aware of, with Google stating the updates are ‘subject to certain limitations’ from third-party suppliers.
“Google will work with suppliers in an effort to ensure continued support”.
