Apple is reportedly planning to release a smartwatch later this year that can connect directly to cellular networks without relying on an iPhone.
Apple’s current smartwatch has to be connected wirelessly to an iPhone to stream music, download directions in maps, and send messages while on the go.
But some new models planned for release at the end of the year, will be able to conduct many tasks without an iPhone in range, news reports say.
Intel will supply LTE modems for the new Watch in a coup by the chipmaker, which has been trying for years to get its components into more Apple mobile devices. Qualcomm has previously been the main modem supplier for iPhones and other Apple mobile gadgets, but is currently embroiled in a bitter legal dispute with Apple over pricing of its components.
