Apple is reportedly planning a significant expansion of artificial intelligence tools across its next generation of iPhone and iPad software as the company attempts to strengthen its position against increasingly aggressive competition from Google and Samsung.

The new AI features are expected to arrive with iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, which Apple is anticipated to unveil at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June before a broader public rollout later this year.

According to reports from people familiar with the company’s plans, Apple is developing a range of AI-powered additions focused on productivity, writing assistance, automation and personalisation.

Among the upcoming features is a new grammar-checking system designed to function similarly to third-party writing tools such as Grammarly. The feature will reportedly analyse text in real time and present suggested corrections through a translucent menu interface that appears from the bottom of the screen.

Users will be able to approve individual edits, apply all suggested changes at once or dismiss recommendations entirely. Controls to pause the checking process and navigate between highlighted sections are also said to be included.

The tool builds upon Apple’s existing Writing Tools suite introduced in 2024, which already supports functions such as proofreading and summarising text.

Apple is also reportedly testing new ways to integrate AI writing assistance more deeply into the operating system. Internal versions of the software are said to include a “Write With Siri” option integrated directly into the keyboard alongside a “Help Me Write” prompt that appears while Siri is active within text fields.

Another major upgrade is expected for Apple’s Shortcuts app, which allows users to automate actions across apps and devices. The revised version reportedly lets users create automations simply by describing what they want in natural language rather than manually building workflows step-by-step.

Instead of navigating menus and scripting commands, users could reportedly type requests into a text field explaining what they want the shortcut to do, with the system automatically generating and installing the automation.

Apple is also preparing AI-generated wallpaper tools that will allow users to create custom backgrounds for lock screens and home screens using the company’s Image Playground system.

The move follows similar AI wallpaper features already introduced by Samsung and Google, both of which have moved aggressively to expand AI functionality across their smartphones.

Apple’s broader AI push is also expected to include updates to Siri, including a redesigned interface and stronger control over apps and device functions. Reports have also suggested Apple is working on a new visual intelligence mode allowing Siri to analyse information directly through the camera app.

Additional AI editing features for the Photos app are also believed to be in development.

The company’s renewed focus on AI comes as rivals continue widening their lead in consumer-facing artificial intelligence tools. Google recently introduced Android 17 alongside its Gemini Intelligence platform, which includes advanced automation capabilities, AI-generated widgets and a new dictation mode capable of filtering out filler words during speech input.

Samsung has similarly expanded its Galaxy AI ecosystem with increasingly sophisticated on-device AI features integrated throughout its smartphones and software platforms.

Apple has faced growing criticism over the pace of its AI rollout compared with competitors, particularly as rivals push AI deeper into everyday smartphone interactions.

The company has not publicly confirmed the reported features, and Apple declined to comment on the speculation.
