Apple Face ID Coming To iPad

If you thought it was going to be embarrassing having to hold up your iPhone to your face to log on, wait till you try it with a 12″ iPad.

According to sources the next version of the iPad Pro, expected in mid-2018, will also have the face-scanning technology, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Apple will include Face ID in the iPad in an attempt to bridge the gap between the iPhone and iPad user experience, Kuo wrote in a note to investors.

The move by Apple to double down on the cutting edge technology — more secure than its Touch ID, will drum up more support for the fledging technology, the analyst wrote.

“We expect Apple’s major promotion of facial recognition related applications will encourage the Android camp to also dedicate more resources to developing hardware and facial recognition applications,” Kuo wrote.

The iPad Pro, Apple’s flagship tablet, currently uses the Touch ID fingerprint scanning technology. It is not yet clear whether or not the home button will be eliminated on the tablet — as it will be on the iPhone X when it makes its debut next month — to allow for an edge-to-edge display.

Apple’s current line of iPads was released in June, so the next iPad Pro probably won’t make an appearance for several months, at least.

Hopefully, that will give Apple time to solve the Face ID-related supply chain issues that have been hounding the iPhone X.

The world will get its first taste of Apple’s Face ID tech when the iPhone X is released on Nov. 3.
