Amazon Under Investigation For Claims It Prevented Fair Competition
Fresh from a record growth spell in Australia, Amazon is now under investigation in Germany with the Countries antitrust agency accusing the big online retailer from preventing fair competition via the retailers online marketplace.
The Federal Cartel Office, or Bundeskartellamt, said in a statement that it has received ‘many complaints’ over the treatment of third-party sellers.
These include withholding payments, blocking seller accounts without explanation, and the misuse of sellers’ information.
Officials said the Company stands accused of abusing its market position to the detriment of merchants using its platform.
‘Amazon’s “double role” as the largest retailer and largest marketplace has the potential to hinder other sellers on its platform,’ said agency head Andreas Mundt.
‘We will scrutinise its terms of business and practices toward sellers.’
A separate investigation into Amazon’s use of data is already underway by the European Union’s Competition Commission.
