Amazon has announced the closure of three of its warehouses this year, a move that will displace roughly 1,200 employees.

The UK warehouses, located in Hemel Hempstead, Doncaster, and Gourock, will be closed ahead of the creation of two new fulfilment centres, in Peddimore in the West Midlands, and Stockton-on-Tees in County Durham.

Amazon has promised the 1,200 workers will be offered jobs at other facilities, and that the two new fulfillment centres will eventually create 2,500 new jobs.

The GMB union calls the closures a “kick in the teeth”, saying it is unreasonable to expect the workers to move to a different location, “which may be many miles away.”

This is all a drop in the ocean, given the company has confirmed it will be axing more than 18,000 roles across Amazon global.

It marks the biggest mass layoff the company has made in its 29 years.
