Apple Watch May Not Launch Until After March 20
Upon unveiling the smartwatch in September, Apple, while not revealing a specific date, stated it would be available in early 2015.
However, it now appears the Apple Watch may launch later than previously expected.
Apple senior vice president of retail and online stores Angela Ahrendts has indicated the Apple Watch will launch in spring, Apple news site 9to5Mac has reported.
Ahrendts made the comments to retail employees in a video message, a transcript of which was provided by a source, 9to5Mac reported, reportedly stating “we’re going into the holidays, we’ll go into Chinese New Year, and then we’ve got a new watch launch coming in the spring”.
Spring will begin in the US on March 20.
The wearables market, and in particular the smartwatches category, is becoming increasingly competitive, with manufacturers seeking to capture share of a market expected to post strong growth in the next few years.
A recent report from technology research firm Gartner predicted that by 2016 smartwatches will comprise about 40 per cent of consumer wrist-worn devices.
Microsoft is another major manufacturer seeking market share, launching a new wearable device last week, taking the wraps off its Microsoft Band.
