The Racing Network will also stream the Melbourne Cup race via its app or online at www.racingnetwork.com.au

There has been a 60% jump in the number of Aussies watching horse racing live on phones or tablets via the Racing Network, Telstra said today.

During Spring Racing Carnival 2013over 1.8million visited the Network and this year is shaping up to outrun that figure with over 650,000 visits in September alone said Telstra executives.

“This Spring carnival we expect a record amount of people will use their smartphone and tablet to get involved in the action, particularly on Melbourne Cup day.”

Faster 4G network, bigger and better smartphones and an improved racing app meant that customers get a better all-round experience without having to be in front of a TV.

Apple downloads of the Racing App jumped a whopping 500% since November last, while Android downloads soared 220% since February 2014.

“The Melbourne Cup has always been the race that stops a nation; now with technology it’s more likely to just be a pause as more and more people watch the race – wherever they are, doing whatever they are doing – on the convenience of their smartphone or tablet,” he said.

Viewers for Saturday’s Derby Day race meet saw a 54% increase in traffic across all mobile platforms with 350% increase on Apple devices, including iPhone, iPad.

“The Flemington racetrack is a hive of activity on race day, with racegoers expected to once again turn to their phones and tablets to enhance and share their experience.
“Based on current projections, we expect Melbourne Cup day 4G traffic to be around two and half times what we saw at last year’s event.
“When the Cup is run, we expect network traffic to drop by a quarter before exploding, with more than five per cent of the days total traffic being crammed into the 15 minute period immediately after the race.
“We are also anticipating around a quarter of a million voice calls at the track on race day alone and around 80,000 text messages.
“To deal with the demand, Telstra has more than doubled 4G capacity at Flemington and is providing the kind of infrastructure that is required to support a medium sized city.
“For the technically minded, this includes 21 3G cells (with 90 carriers or channels) and 17 4G cells, including a mix of larger sites microcells and in-building distributed antenna systems.
