New Oz Net Connections Slowing

Some 5.1 million of them are on DSL fixed lines, and just over 6 million on mobile connections.

But fibre is now the fastest growing type of Internet connection, Stats says – no great surprise, considering the NBN rollout, not to mention the efforts of TPG to spread the Net via fibre to thousands of apartment-block basements.

Fibre-connected subscribers numbered 217,000, up 107 percent, at the end of June.

Speeds appear to be improving, with more than 10.2 million users logging on at 8Mbps or better. Those lumbered with 1.5 to less than 8Mbps now number 2.3 million, down from 3.75 million a year ago.

And the plebs are downloading more. Aussies downloaded 1.4 million terabytes of data in the three months to June 30, up 21 percent on the three months to December 31.
