Melbourne Man Charged Over Revenge Cyber Attacks

In the Melbourne Magistrates Court yesterday, Hutchison faced charges of inciting Indonesian hackers to attack the Web sites of ASIO, the Attorney-General’s Department and Australia’s overseas spy agency ASIS, according to an ABC news report.

The charges allege the 21-year-old made contact with the Indonesian hackers, who had been angered by claims in October 2013 that the Australian embassy in Jakarta had been used for spying.

In retaliation, the Indonesian hackers, operating under of the banner of the Anonymous online collective, attacked a large number of Web sites belonging to private Australian businesses and organisations.

Australian Federal Police allege that Hutchison then published a video on a Web site in which the Australian arm of Anonymous urged the Indonesian hackers to target the ASIO, ASIS and Attorney-General’s sites.

Both the ASIO and ASIS sites were attacked and brought down for varying periods of time. Hutchison has also been charged with possession of a laser pointer and will face a committal mention on April 8.
