Is The iPhone 8 Set To Be More Samsung Than Apple
The Korea Times is reporting that Samsung has renewed talks with Apple over the use of Samsung’s OLED screens in an upcoming iPhone, Samsung already supplies processor components for Apple.
Apple currently use LCD screens supplied by LG and Sharp, in their iPhone smartphones, and subsequent to previous reports it appears that LCD screens will remain in place for next year’s iPhone 7 release.
That means that Samsung is targeting the iPhone 8 to ship with an OLED screen.
When Apple dumped SanDisk memory for memory from Samsung SanDisk reported a massive slump in sales resulting in the Company being sold to Western Digital.
The use of OLED screen technology offers a number of advantages – it reduces power requirements is the most attractive, has a wider viewing angle, brighter screen, and more vibrant colours claim observers.
Analysts believe that an OLED display, allows Apple to build out a marketing campaign around ‘the best screen on any iPhone yet’, but there is a significant upside for Samsung who are also tipped to move to OLED smartphone display.
According to Samsung OLED is only ideal for small sized screens due to costs associated with producing large screen OLED panels, a problem LG Display is currently confronting.
While it’s smartphone and mobile devices division continues to struggle to make any significant contribution to Samsung’s bottom line, both the silicon manufacturing and the component supply business are doing well. landing the next generation plus one iPhone contract would be the icing on the cake for Samsung.
