HP And LG Solid Performers As PC Monitor Market Grows In Q2

The worldwide PC monitor market performed better than forecast in the 2016 second quarter, with HP and LG Electronics in particular posting solid year-on-year growth, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC).

The IDC found that the market grew 4.9 per cent year-on-year and 4.6 per cent from the previous quarter, with more than 30 million units shipped.

“The second quarter proved better than forecast overall, with the US, EMEA and Canada markets recording solid year-over-year results,” Maura Fitzgerald, IDC senior research analyst, Worldwide Trackers, commented.

“However, IDC expects the global monitor market will continue to decline at rates around 3 per cent year-over-year from 2018 through 2020.”

The IDC forecasts that 118 million PC monitor units will be shipped for the full year, while it expects a year-on-year decline of 12.7 per cent in worldwide shipments in the 2017 second quarter.

Looking further ahead, by 2020, the IDC expects worldwide shipments will be less than 100 million units as mobile device adoption at lower price points continues.

In the second quarter, curved monitors continued to rise, claiming 1.9 per cent market share and growing 221 per cent year-on-year.

In terms of screen size, the 21.5” and 19.5” segments continued to dominate, with a 22 per cent and 12.2 per cent market share, respectively, while among the top 10 screen sizes, the 23.8” and 31.5” segments posted the largest year-on-year growth at 100.1 per cent and 76.8 per cent, respectively.

The IDC expects that monitors with TV tuners will have a 5.3 per cent market share in the 2017 second quarter, up from 4.8 per cent year-on-year, led by LG and Samsung with a combined market share of 99 per cent.

Dell retained its position at the top of the market in the second quarter, posting 3.8 per cent growth year-on-year, while HP (second position) posted growth of 19.6 per cent and LG (fifth position) posted growth of 10.5 per cent (see table below).
