When I first started in the technology media business, one of the first companies I visited in 1989 was NEC. Over time I saw several leading edge products launched by this company, from early PABX systems to leading edge CRT monitors used by the graphic design industry, to the stunning product range they have today. Back then they were also a household name in Australia due to strong brand advertising and marketing.
Today NEC is still around. The brand is wilted and faded and unknown among millions of new consumers who have not been exposed to the brand marketing of old.
The sad thing is that this is that this company has some of the best technology products I have ever seen from LCD TVs to a new generation of notebooks, projectors and media servers, to commercial plasma and display systems that are not only functionally good but brilliantly designed and engineered.
So what is wrong at NEC and why is it that you don't see much of NEC product in Australian stores?
