Sony Starts Blu-Ray War By Cutting Prices By $100

By Branko Miletic | Monday | 25/08/2008

According to a number of reports, Sony reportedly intends to cut the price of some of its top Blu-ray players at the end of September by $100. At the time of printing, Sony did not confirm nor deny the report.

This price cut for its top player, the BDP-S350. (i.e. non-PlayStation 3) Blu-ray players by $100 in September, was attributed to an anonymous source cited on the HD Guru Web site.

And the same time a few sources have claimed that a number of budget players manufactured by Funai and sold under the Philips, Magnavox, Sylvania, and Insignia brands will drop to as low as $249 per unit.

In other words, the Sony BDP-S350 would drop from $US400 to $US300, and a new, as yet unreleased model, the BDP-S550, would be sold at around $US400, instead of the $US500 price that was previously announced, according to a report in Crave.

Locally, Blu-ray price tags under $300 means it wont be long until we see $199 sales deals on Blu-ray players at the end of this year from some appliance retailers --all this, just in time for Christmas.
