LCD Sales Up, Samsung, Sony & LG Clean Up

By Branko Miletic | Tuesday | 19/08/2008

According to DisplaySearch, sales of LCD and plasma TVs helped boost North American TV shipments by 26 per cent to some 9.3 million units, a trend that has been repeated in Australia where TV sales have also risen over the past few weeks.

In the overall LCD sales category, the leaders in the US were Samsung, Sony and LG Electronics, while Panasonic, Vizio and Samsung claimed the top spots for plasma sales. However Samsung, Sony, and Vizio were tops in total TV shipments.

In a sign that echoes JB HiFI predictions of TVs becoming replacement items and keeping up strong sales figures despite a slowing economy both here and abroad, overall shipments were up 28 per cent from a year ago ? the strongest growth since DisplaySearch started tracking TV shipments in 2004, the report said.

Regardless of the economic doom and gloom predictions, total sales of LCD TVs in the US jumped 30 per cent from last quarter, while plasma TV sales were up 35 per cent, according to the DisplaySearch report.

And in an interesting side note, Samsung overtook Sony for the top LCD TV unit share in the 40" category, though Sony rose from number three to number two in overall TV shipments.
