It is claimed that Apple's launch of the iPhone last year has proven to be a very lucky break for RIM as the touchscreen handset raised the public's awareness or smart devices to levels not seen before
RIM's net profit for this quarter stood at a whopping $US412.5 million, up from an equally respectable $US 187.4 million last year.
Despite or perhaps in spite of the popularity of Apple's iPhone, RIM still tops the charts of smart phone sales, by shipping some 4.4 million BlackBerry handsets in the fourth quarter alone.
So after many years of playing in the big corporate sandpit, RIM recently began targeting the consumer market and in what could be a worrying sign for Apple, RIM said that more than half its new customers last quarter were consumers and small business owners.
