Topfield & Tivo Brand Killers In PVR Market

By David Richards | Wednesday | 27/05/2009

Topfield who entered the Australian market after a falling out with the Digital Products Group is now the #1 set top box and personal video recorder brand in Australia just behind Tivo according to the latest GFK data for April 2009.

Topfield who entered the Australian market after a falling out with the Digital Products Group is now the #1 set top box and personal video recorder brand in Australia just behind Tivo according to the latest GFK data for April 2009.

Currently the Korean brand is #1 in the STB market and #2 in the PVR market with several manufacturers suffering from a lack of stock during the past two months which retailers claim has hurt sales of set to box attachments.

18 months ago the Digital Products Group dumped the Topfield brand for the Beyonwiz set top box now the tables have been turned with Beyonwiz struggling to get traction up against the likes of Topfield and Tivo.

The move came after several executives defected from Topfield to create the Beyonwiz brand of which DPG are believed to have a financial investment.
Teac who were last year #1 in the PVR market have now been pushed into third place in 2009 due to a shortage of stock however this issue has been fixed claims Peter Burnham Marketing Manager at Teac. "We are confident that we will get our share back as stock starts to filter into the channel".

Later this year Topfield will enter the market with a new media centre offering based around a personal video recorder that has a new Linux based operating system and the Ice TV EPG which will include new interactive features similar to the new Tivo offering.
