However, that's exactly what the CEO of desktop publishing software giant Quark said in a recent interview with channelnews.
Ray Schiavone, President and CEO of Quark, a company that up until 5 years ago was synonomous with desktop publishing and that once had a near 80 per cent of the DTP market said: "In effect we gave it away. We became arrogant, we stopped listening to our customers and lost our direction".
Where once Quark was basically the only choice for publishers and graphic designers, Adobe and its InDesign offering managed to steal a large chunk of its market.
Moreover, one thing that Quark really did not appreciate was the emergence of the web- a near-fatal flaw that was quickly exploited by Adobe.
A point, which Schiavone admits when he says: "We became isolated and we only listened to our own rhetoric".
But, in many ways, this admission of corporate sins is doing the company wonders as now, under Schiavone's leadership, there has been a refocus of not only Quark's direction but also its overall future.
