HD DVD Cries Help From Hot Water

By Sarah Falson | Monday | 04/02/2008

Amidst market commentary that the HD DVD next-generation DVD format is ?dead?, following a major film company, Warner Bros, cutting ties with the struggling technology, film company Universal Pictures Australasia has come out with news of 20 new HD DVD titles before the end of 2008.

With Toshiba slashing HD DVD player prices by almost half last month, HD DVD players are definitely affordable and accessible to more consumer groups than just the ?early adopters', however format rival Blu-ray still remains the critic's pick for market dominator with backing from some of the industry's largest content companies, including Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Add Sony Computer Entertainment to the mix, with its Blu-ray-compatible PlayStation 3 selling like hotcakes, and HD DVD is in hot water.

"HD DVD is loaded with signature features and state-of-the-art technology, including real-time interactivity, picture in picture, scene sharing, and web-enabled bonus content, giving viewers the power to go deeper into the action," said today's notice from Universal Pictures Australasia.

"HD DVD players are the most affordable option which as well as enabling more consumers to enjoy the superior benefits of HD DVD also gives them the ability to up-scale their entire DVD movie collection via HDMI output to near high def picture quality."
