HTC Shelves Tablet Plan New HD2 Smartphone Today

By David Richards | Monday | 18/01/2010

HTC, who today will launch their new HD2 Smartphone in Australia, has pulled the plug on their tablet PC product which was originally planned to compete with the new Apple iSlate offering.

Anthony Petts, Sales and Marketing Director, ANZ, for the  HTC Corporation said that all work on the planned tablet had been suspended and that the Company was now "focusing their efforts on a new generation of mobile phones" including new offerings running the Google Android operating system.

The HD2device which will be launched at the Sydney Opera House,  comes with a 4.3-inch touchscreen and a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and is powered by Windows Mobile 6.5.

Launched overseas several months ago the HD2's Qualcomm Snapdragon Q 1 GHz processor is fast it also delivers smooth interaction between functions which has been a problem in the past with Windows Mobile based phones.

The phone set to be launched today will have a Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional OS with HTC's Sense UI overlaid over the operating system.

The Sense UI look and feel is very similar to the Companies TouchFLO system found on the Hero.

HTC has fully customised the UI to make it finger friendly and the capacitive touchscreen negates the use of a stylus altogether. From onscreen virtual keypads to accessing menus and sub menus, the large display makes it all very convenient.

The new HD2 will be sold on the Telstra network, pricing has not been announced.
