He called on the audience of specialist retailers, politicians, business leaders and media representatives to work together to encourage consumers to appreciate the merits of household appliances, which are both energy-efficient and economical in their consumption of other resources. As Dr. Gutberlet stated: "Together, we ? the manufacturers, the trade and the politicians ? can make a substantial contribution to achieving this major goal."
"Private households are already the second largest consumer of energy worldwide and the third largest emitter of carbon dioxide. Household appliances are responsible for approximately half of domestic electricity consumption. And the trend is strongly upward as demand in the newly industrialising countries rises".
"The largest household appliance manufacturer in Europe and the third largest in the world, BSH was quick to recognise the opportunities, which a growing concern to protect the environment offered".
His company has been systematically reducing its appliances' energy and water consumption levels since the first oil crisis back in the 1970s. BSH was the first major manufacturer in the world to eliminate CFCs and FCs from its cooling appliances and has long since pursued a policy of introducing energy-efficient appliances in the emerging markets.
